Bonnie Lee Borchert would  sometimes come over to the First United Methodist Church ,where I was the lead usher and greeter. I would greet her by calling her sweetheart. Bonnie and I first met in the 4th grade at Big Picadome Elementary. In the summer of 1965 I attended theYMCA Camp Daniel Boone as a junior councelor and Bonnie was at camp across the river. She came over to visit the last week of camp and she rode behind me on horseback into camp. Bonnie Lee and I continued to see each other with her picking me up to go to her house where we would study for quarterly senior english exams and dance with a scottsh war sword and she would practice on her set of uneven parallel bars with me spoting for her. At my request Bonnie came and joined the exployer scout troop dance troop in which Barbara Stewart and I belonged to dance a scottish highland sword dance with me. [ A dance for lovers.]  On or about the first of March of 1966, Bonnie came to me between classes and told me that she was in love with me.  I asked her if she was sure and she said yes. As a result I asked her if she would marry me.  Her answer was yes.  Bonnie and I immediately  made plans to get married on or before Baccalaureate. Bonnie had come to the duplex apartment where my parents lived the night before she died with the intent to telling my parents that Bonnie and I were engaged.  My grandmother even heard her say to my parents that I had proposed to Bonnie and was quite pleased.  Bonnie died in my arms when she died at Good Samaritan Hospital 17 March 1966. Bonnie had died of exsaguination (blood loss) as result of a ruptured spleen caused by the accident caused by a drunk driver who had hit Bonnie head on.  I still miss her more than any one else. Neither Bonnie or I had time to tell the class about our engagement before Bonnie died.  Only the principal  and our closed friends knew and came to me to give their condolences.  Signed with Love, JB Cotnam

I attended church with Bonnie at Chapel Hill Presbyterian Church.  She was her father's only child and the only daughter of her mother. She had older brothers.
